ScaNature

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 August 2026 · applies to the iOS app “ScaNature”

In short: ScaNature works without an account and without tracking. Your finds, photos and settings live only on your device. Only for identification is a photo sent once to our server and from there to Google’s image recognition (Gemini) – and it is not stored by us. There are no analytics SDKs, no advertising ID and no sharing for advertising purposes.

2. Principles

We process as little data as possible (data minimisation). The app requires no user account, collects no names, email addresses or device identifiers, and contains no third-party analytics, crash-reporting or advertising software.

3. What we process and why

3.1 Identifying a find (core feature)

When you identify a photo, the app sends the (downscaled) photo and your app language to our server (a Cloudflare Worker). The server forwards the photo once to the Google Gemini API image-recognition service, receives the identification and returns it to the app. Our server does not store the photo and does not log any content. The result is stored on your device only if you save the find to your field book.

3.2 Abuse protection (App Attest)

So that only genuine installations of ScaNature can use our server, the app uses Apple’s App Attest. Your iPhone generates a cryptographic key; Apple confirms that requests come from an unmodified ScaNature app on a real device. Our server stores the public part of this key, a counter and the number of free identifications used by this installation. This data contains no device name, no Apple ID and no other identifier that would let us identify you. The record is deleted automatically 12 months after last use; reinstalling creates a new key.

3.3 Subscription (ScaNature Pro)

Purchases are made exclusively through the Apple App Store; we receive no payment or account details. To manage subscription status we use RevenueCat (RevenueCat, Inc., USA), which works with a random, anonymous identifier. Our server checks that identifier for an active subscription and caches the result for at most one hour – not the identifier itself but a one-way hash of it.

3.4 Place found (optional)

Only if you tap “Use my location” when saving a find and grant location permission does your device determine your location once and ask Apple’s geocoding service for a place name. Place name and coordinates are stored only locally in your field book and are never sent to our server.

3.5 Local data on your device

Finds, photos, keywords, settings and the free-identification counter are kept in the app’s protected storage on your iPhone. They are deleted when you delete the app. Depending on your iOS settings they may be included in your device backup (iCloud or computer backup).

3.6 Ad measurement without tracking (SKAdNetwork)

If you installed ScaNature via an advertisement, Apple may anonymously inform the ad network through the privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork mechanism that an installation and certain usage steps (e.g. “first identification”, “subscription started”) occurred. No advertising ID, device identifier or personal data is transmitted; neither we nor the ad network can link this to you. That is why the app does not ask for tracking permission.

3.7 Contact by email

If you write to us, we process your details to answer your request (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR) and delete them once they are no longer needed.

6. Retention

7. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 21). You may withdraw consent (location) at any time in iOS Settings. You may lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, e.g. the one responsible for your place of residence.

Note: because we store no identifiers that would let us identify a person, we generally cannot attribute access or erasure requests concerning server data to a specific person (Art. 11 GDPR). All content data is on your device anyway and can be deleted there directly.

8. Children

ScaNature is not directed at children under 16 and collects no data that would allow us to determine a person’s age or identity.

9. Changes

We update this policy when the app or the legal situation changes. The current version is available in the app (Profile → Privacy) and at this address.
